Think Twice Before You Name Your Baby

Today I met new teachers at a new school I was subbing at and introduced myself.  I told them my name and the conversation naturally turned towards how different names are nowadays.  One man even told me about how one family had all these kids with different names like Mikayla and Delaney.  I didn't have the heart to tell him that these names were pretty mainstream.

One of the teachers that I met is from Africa and told us that many Africans name their children after popular events being reported in the media at the time of the child's birth.  He then proceeded to tell me that because of this tradition, he had an uncle named Hitler.  My reaction is as follows:

Taleen: "His name is Hitler?!"
Teacher: "Yes, Hitler."
Taleen: "Does he go by that?!!"
Teacher: "Yes!"

Luckily I don't think my questions were offensive and this teacher totally understood why I would be shocked.  Can you believe that though?  I'm pretty positive that this man's parents were only reading the headlines.
