Last night my parents and I went up to the War Eagle monument in the Sioux. War Eagle was a Sioux Indian chief who was super awesome and nice to everyone and created peace among his own people and new settlers. He's buried on a high bluff overlooking the Big Sioux and Missouri Rivers and sometimes it's nice to go up there and think about the early days of Siouxland and what a cool guy he was. It's also a great place to look at impending floodwaters.
Siouxland is about to flood, you guys. It's getting bad. People do have advance notice but it's still really awful to have to get all of your possessions out of your house all while knowing that your home will be underwater for two months.
So that's really sad. Naturally, people in Siouxland are worried and concerned and trying to help. They're also mega curious. So many people went up to the War Eagle monument on that bluff high above the river and looked out at the homes that are about to flood and what flooding has already occurred. I can tell you from seeing it firsthand that a lot of things are going to be underwater.
Many of the gawkers/concerned citizens brought their children up to the bluff so that they too could see history (this is the first time the Missouri will have flooded in my lifetime, and hopefully the only time). Kids were running around everywhere. It was honestly almost shocking to me how many people had kids. They were all over the place! Most of the kids used the opportunity to run around on the grass and roll down hills and get covered in dirt, something which I completely supported. And all of the kids looked the same to me. Every one of them was wearing flip flops and covered in dirt. Except for one girl.
That's actually a little bit of a lie. She too was wearing flip flops and covered in dirt. But the thing that was different about her was that in addition to her shorts and tank top, she was wearing one light pink, silver-starred sleeve.
That's right. Just one pink sleeve. And it looked so cool. It was like a leg warmer for your arm. It stretched all the way from the top of her arm down to her hand, where there was a hole for her thumb. And all I could think when I saw it was "She must know a junior high girl. They are the only people that would be so on top of fashion like this."
I did work up the courage to ask the girl about it and her mom told me that there are in fact two sleeves but that one was lost. She also said they got them at a garage sale and think that it once went with a matching shirt but now were sold as just the sleeves. I told the little girl that it looked cool and she just stared at me. I then walked away wishing that I as a pop star so that I could wear this on a stage somewhere. If only I had the confidence to rock these awesome outfits like these girls do.
