What is this in my soup?

Every single day that I eat lunch is an adventure.  I have lunch at school and each meal consists of rice, soup, a protein, a vegetable, and “dessert”.  Some days I get something amazing like bulgogi, Korean beef.  One day I miraculously got a version of lasagna.  And then other days I get something so out there that I just don’t know what to do with it.

Like the day there was a crab in my soup.

Not crab, as in crab meat.  A crab.  As in an entire crab.  Minus the eyes.  I don’t know where the eyes were and I don’t really want to know.  What I do know is that it was apparently normal to have a whole crab in soup and be expected to eat it with a spoon and chopsticks.  I was not completely sure of how to go about this so I watched others eat and then tried to replicate their methods.  Fail.  Do you know how hard it is to pick up a crab with chopsticks, take a bite of the meat without getting shell in your mouth, and then enjoy seafood bliss?  It’s quite the feat.  And one that I did not accomplish because every time I tried (and miraculously managed to not drop the crab) I got shell in my bite.  Since I felt awkward spitting out shell, and truthfully wasn’t sure how to do that without also spitting out what little meat I had gotten from the crab, I just ate the shell.

Yes, it was weird.  But I just did it.  It was the best course of action at the time.  And that is often my attitude here in Korea.  To just go with it for the time being.

To be eaten with chopsticks.  Naturally.
