Lunch is an adventure

Food in Korea is difficult.  Delicious but difficult.  What do you mean by difficult, Taleen?  I mean a couple of things by that.  Let's list them.

1.  I rarely if ever have any idea what I'm eating.  I know what rice is but that's pretty much where it ends.  So mostly I just taste everything and then if I don't like it I claim I'm on a diet or it's too hot and I don't have to finish it.  Problem solved.

2.  Sometimes I do know what I'm eating. Just yesterday I ate a protein that I suspect was  either eel or mushrooms.  It bothers me that I think both of those options are equally plausible.

3.  Mealtimes at school become an event where people just watch me to see what will happen next.  They watch to see if I'll drop food with my chopsticks (yes), they watch to see if I'll like the food (sometimes), and if they see that I do like the food, they watch to see if they can offer me more (no thank you, but they do it anyways).

All in all eating is a bit exhausting because it just requires so much thought and effort.  But that being said, Korean food tastes great.  My favorites:

1.  BBQ.  Grilled by you at your table and wrapped in lettuce.  Called Samgyupsal.

2.  Duck!!

3.  Bibimbap.  It's rice, vegetables, and meat all mixed together with hot chili paste.  I first ate it on the plane and needed instructions for what to do.

4.  Soybean and chili paste!  It's super delicious with the BBQ duck.

5.  Bulgogi.  It's thinly sliced beef with rice and sometimes in a stew.  Like Korean comfort food!

I highly recommend finding a Korean restaurant and trying some of these foods.  Then you can tell me whether you like it or not!  That'll be fun for me.

  1. What a great idea, Taleen! There is (or used to be) a Korean restaurant close to where I work. If it's still there, I'll try to stop there and tell you what I think.
