I guess it's good that you're making a connection...

As you can imagine, Catholic school is full of religion.  The kids pray at the beginning of most every class and much of the decor involves religious images.  For the most part I don't really notice any of this, partly because I went to this school so I already know it's there, and partly because nobody ever points out any of the objects.  But one kid took interaction with religious symbols to a whole new level.

I was substitute teaching for a class where the teacher had put a large image of Jesus' face over the door.  Jesus doesn't really look super amped in the picture, but rather looks as if He's staring directly into your soul.  I feel like this is normal for images of Jesus and most people think nothing of it.  But the previously mentioned student found that the picture had a special draw for him.  So he had a staring contest with Jesus.

The boy sat in his desk and just kept staring and staring, to the point where his entire body got into the competition.  Other kids started to look and giggle and I couldn't really decide what to do.  He wasn't being overly disruptive, just goofy.  So I let him carry on until he started to talk and annoy me.  But really, all I could think was, "What is this?!?  Crazy children."

Finally the boy drew a picture of himself and taped it on the opposite side of the room so that the staring contest could continue on.  Which I suppose is one way to win that sort of "battle".  I think at the end I was just pleased that the boy was even paying attention to Jesus.  It's probably a good reminder for him to behave and keep it together.
