Yesterday was hot. Really hot. Like, 96 degrees hot (not to be confused with the hit 2000's band 98 degrees, singers of hit Disney songs). The high school doesn't have central air conditioning and I can tell you from personal experience that the window units we're using are completely pointless. They cool only about 4 feet of space directly in front of them, then just quit. So naturally, every single kid wanted to sit in front of the air conditioners.
I don't really like to let the kids sit directly in front of the air conditioner because then they're blocking what little hope the rest of us have of getting any cool air whatsoever. But kids still try. They beg and plead and attempt to convince me that they will pass out if they don't get even one breath of cool air. But I don't relent.
One kid went above and beyond on his attempts to be seated in the prime area of air conditioning glory. Conversation as follows:
Sly Child: "Ms. Brady, can I sit here today?" (meaning in front of the air conditioning)
Me: "We'll talk about it after I take attendance."
Sly Child: "Pleeeeease!"
Me: "I'll think about it."
Sly Child: "What if I told you your hair looked really good today?"
Me: "Well thank you but it looks this good every day."
Then the kid laughed. At least he put in the effort! The good news is we got out early because of the heat so the children got to depart for their hopefully air conditioned homes and bask in modern-day temperature-controlled glory.
Oh man, I pity teachers/students at the end of the year. Hot classrooms full of warm bodies. The lights have to be turned off to keep the temperature reasonable. Hang in there!
ReplyDelete...that kid had a pretty good line. He's going to be dangerous when he's older, haha.
