Danger

A conversation between me and students on a particularly hot day in Korea:

Student A:  Teacher, did your high school have air conditioner?

Me:  No, actually none of my schools ever had air conditioning.  I went to school in really old buildings.  So if it got really, really hot sometimes school would be cancelled.

All Students:  WAHH!!!  *a general sound of disbelief/jealousy*

Me:  (trying to curb some of their jealousy)  We had to though because it gets so hot in Iowa.  It can get to 34, 35, 36 degrees Celsius.  That's very dangerous for students.

Student B:  (said in a deadpan voice with a straight face)  I'm in danger.

I laughed after that, I couldn't help it.  She was so cute!

Our school does have air conditioning but they are just standing units in each room.  And some rooms are so big that one unit doesn't do much to cool down 36 kids in a room the size of a racquetball court with 9 foot ceilings.  I know America isn't perfect but I really think we should be spreading the idea of central air conditioning.  That's something that we are doing right.
