I met a famous person

Today I went to the DMZ and as a part of that tour I went inside the 3rd tunnel.  The 3rd tunnel is a tunnel that was dug by the North Koreans and was intended for use during a surprise attack on South Korea.  This never came to fruition and now the site serves as a tourist spot.  One man's loss is another man's gain.

Today while in the tunnel, Friend Erin and I saw a man who looked familiar.  We passed him again and Erin confirmed that it was Richard Engel, NBC news chief foreign correspondent.  We introduced ourselves, said hi, and kind of had a moment of disbelief that we met a famous person in a tunnel in Korea.  Not expected.  But in any case, he was shooting something (with a very small camera) and it's possible that Erin and I will be in the background on NBC news wearing hardhats and expressions of disbelief.  I was wearing a red sweater and skinny jeans and Erin had on a black tshirt and purple polka-dot scarf.  Please watch either this morning or tonight and find out.  How cool if we really end up on TV!!

  2. Hey Taleen,
Have been loving your blog and eagerly await each new post. Your Mom found the news cast about the tunnel and we actually spotted you in the background. Too cool!
Sounds like you're having a wonderful experience.
Stay safe. I miss you. Sue

  3. I SAW YOU! I watched the "N Korea blocks South workers from shared complex" video on NBCNews.com and saw Taleen in her red shirt and hard hat, to the right of Richard Engel as he walks down the tunnel. I find it hard to believe that the tunnel is now a tourist site. CRAZY!

  4. Wow, that's so cool! Richard Engel is a great reporter, always in the thick of things! I'll have to see if I can find that clip so I can see you!

Taleen shows up about 1:45 into the video, right when they first show Richard Engel walking through the tunnel.

  6. Hi There! I needed to let you know that Nile has talked about you twice this week. This isn't the appropriate place to post, but it's all I could find right now :) He actually asked your dad to DARE you to come back to Sioux City and babysit him and Adeline. This weekend he was asking about you, and said, "Isn't she in Texas or something?" Pretty close, right? Soooo, the Laakes miss you and wish you the best...but come back to Ioway and babysit!!! xoxoxo
